Every country has them – places people love because they hold memories of childhood – freedom and happiness. They don’t necessarily have to be five-star resorts or at the centre of tourist action, but that is part of their charm. Here are a few from South Africa. They are mostly are off the beaten track, are beloved by locals, offer a range of activities, are child friendly and, for overseas visitors, absolute bargains thanks to Australia’s exchange rate. A small catch – there are often dirt roads to negotiate, especially on the Wild Coast, but it’s worth it. Here’s my story, published in The Sydney Morning Herald/The Age Travellers on July 13, 2014.
